THE 2022 Dulcie Lynch Thematic Trophy was won by Malcolm Cole.

His entry told the story of stretcher bearers during the First World War.

 

As Malcolm says, they have been misunderstood or just ignored, but their contribution was immense. It was dangerous and difficult work, and you needed to be both physically and mentally fit. The stretchers, especially when carrying someone through mud were very heavy and cumbersome and the work took the bearers right into the action. The sights they saw must have been horrific.
